Work In Progress for the UNSC Carrier Falling Star CFV-23
Probably one of my biggest models to date. Sketchup hangs and crashes alot when building it, and it's not even half done yet. Average render time with a single core is estimated at 40 minutes with all lights.
In short, it's one beast of a ship. (poly-wise)
Armament includes point-defense 50mm chainguns, primary "Super"-class MAC and secondary cruiser-calibre MAC, Archer missile pods and Shiva nuclear warheads. Air wing can carry up to 40 C709 Longsword Fighter-Bombers, 30 Sabre Interceptors (I may change this once more detail on the Sabres come out from Halo reach), numerous Albatross and Pelican dropships, Sparrowhawks and Hornet CAS birds. HEV bays are located on the underside of the main hangar, with dual landing decks on each hangar module (think Battlestar Pegasus style). Next to these are "slow" landing decks on the main superstructure (inspired by Starship Trooper's Rodger Young), that allows casual landings and additional storage for Pelicans and smaller craft "on-deck" to prevent cluttering in the landing bays for the excessively huge Longswords.
Ship role is mostly for fleet engagements, as opposed to the only other carrier we see in canon, the UNSC Spirit of Fire (and one fine ship she is). The Spirit of Fire seems more of an assault ship, carrying troops and supplies to support "amphibious" landings from space or in-atmosphere, as well as lower-powered MACs for supporting planetside units. In contrast, the UNSC Falling Star is designed primarily for engagements against Covenant capital ships (hence her heavy MAC loadout and thick battle-plate), and a heavier combat air-wing and smaller Marine complement.
Had to do a tad load of research for this. The overall design was influenced by the TCS Tiger's Claw, TCS Concordia and the Ralari-class Kiltrathi destroyer from the Wing Commander movie, while components and other features from Halo's Frigate, Marathon and Halcyon classes, along with the Rodger Young (Starship Troopers), Sulaco (Aliens) and Battlestars Galactica and Pegasus (BSG).
