Colonial
Olympia-class Battlestar

Battlestar Vestus
BSG-67

The colonial Olympia-class Battlestars were first concieved a year after the first production run of the new and suprerior Mercury-class Battlestars. Due to the high costs in running such a huge and complicated vessel, plus the extra funds diverted in upgrading the class as well as other fleet ships with the latest computers and navigation systems, such as the Command Navigation Program, the Admiralty and the Colonial governement decided to start design and production of a new, smaller, lighter, yet capable vessel for service in the fleet.

Built as a compromise between the heavy, expensive Mercury-class and the light and underpowered Valkyrie-class, the Olympia would have enough firepower and strength to undertake tasks that the Valkyries could not, but would be unsuitable and a waste or resources for the Mercuries. The Olympia boasts 32 primary gun battery turrets, numerous point-defense turrets, various missile launchers and silos. But the main strength of the Olympia, as with the other Battlestars in service in the fleet, is it's ability to launch and recover independent strike craft like Raptors and Vipers. The Olympia herself can carry and service up to four squadrons of the latest Viper Mk.VII (and recently, the Viper Mk.VIII) space-combat fighter craft. The Olympias also field a fleet of support craft, including the Raptor multirole platform as well as various shuttles and repair craft. Like the larger Mercury, she has dual-deck flight decks on each flight pod, one inverted over the other to double landing time and reduce accidents during combat landing scenarios. Her flight pod to hull size ratio is larger than other contemporary battlestars of her time to increase landing efficiency, recently deemed a rather significant flaw in earlier Battlestars, such as the Galactica-class during the Cylon War, where Vipers often took time to complete their landings due to crowded decks. As such, many good pilots had to be left behind when the Battlestars of the time had to retract their flight pods and jump away.

Internally, the Olympias have the classic Battlestar layout. The ship is also unique of having a modular computer-network system, which makes it easier for the ship to upgrade it's electronic suite in the near future. The system proved it's efficiency during a minor fleet-wide upgrade, installing the latest ECM and countermeasures system, first pioneered on the Mercury class.

On her dorsal spine are eight heavily-armoured silos carrying one 5-megaton nuclear missile each, multiplying the capabilities of the Olympia class, which now can face larger enemy vessels using those nuclear warheads. In addition, smaller tactical nuclear warheads could be carried and fired from various missile tubes across the Battlestar's hull and or her Viper and Raptor complement.

The Olympia-class would continue to serve the Colonial Fleet with pride and honour for many decades to come. The designers of the ship expect the ship to be in service for the next forty years, such as the soon-to-be-decomissioned Colonial Battlestar Galactica. Three ships of the class have already finished their shakedown cruise and are in active service. Among them, the Battlestar Vestus, has seen combat operations involving a pirate faction threathening Colonial shipping near the Aerelon border. Three ships of the class are currently in active service, with the lead ship, the Battlestar Olympia, BSG-56 as well as two other ships, the Battlestar Vestus, BSG-67 and Battlestar Cephalus BSG-80. Six more ships of the class are under construction and or being planned.
